Role Title:  Legal Counsel (envisaged as a part time role however we may consider full time if the candidate has relevant language abilities)


Reporting to: Senior Regional Counsel based in Paris

Role Purpose:



Based at the Hitachi Data Systems office located in Amsterdam the successful candidate will have responsibility for providing legal support to the Benelux business.  The ideal candidate will be a qualified lawyer with around three/four years post-qualification experience, who will be primarily responsible for providing legal support for the transactional and compliance requirements of the HDS sales business organizations in the Benelux region. Fluency in English, French and Dutch languages is required. If the candidate has fluency in other relevant languages such that the candidate can assist in providing legal support to other mainland European countries then we may consider a full time role.


Key Responsibilities


  • Providing transaction support for direct and indirect sales, working as an integrated and essential part of the business team in the Benelux countries as well as the EMEA legal team.


  • Assisting the legal team in EMEA-wide legal initiatives including supporting corporate functions such as marketing, human resources and liaising with the global legal team on cross-jurisdictional projects, compliance and export matters.


  • Involvement in the project management of roll-out and localization of EMEA-wide legal infrastructure (e.g. template contracts, drafting databases, training and playbooks) based on key business strategies of the above groups by the sales-supporting lawyers in the various EMEA countries.

Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience


  • Transactional experience (preferably in-house), in information technology (hardware, software, services including professional services).


  • Strong contracts background – practical experience in services supply contracts, IT contracting, distribution and other partner contracts and product leasing.


  • Strong understanding of software licensing/technology transfer and working knowledge of European intellectual property and competition laws.


  • Some exposure to international trade aspects of product and services distribution (e.g. export compliance) SOX and anti-bribery/corruption laws (e.g. FCPA).


  • Proven success in providing legal support to field organizations in sales and/or technical areas.


  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.


  • Ability to successfully manage several projects with simultaneous deadlines and to manage workload prioritization effectively.


  • Ability to foster good relationships within the business and with the broader global legal team.


  • Ability to render duties with understanding of, and to articulate HDS’ products, strategies, policies and an awareness of relevant industry and legal benchmarks.


  • Strong general ‘legal skills’, such as document drafting, advice preparation, client liaison, negotiation abilities and file management.


  • An understanding of the implications of legal judgments on HDS’ business objectives and the trade-offs between business objectives and evaluating legal risks.


  • Analytical reasoning, creativity, conceptual ability, critical thinking and judgment.  


  • Experience working in the UK or another European country is preferred.
